Meet Scarlett Zhang, a third-year Innisian, ICSS social director, FLC leader, and the Innis OSL career engagement chair!
Tell us a little bit about yourself. What year are you in and what are you studying?
I’m currently in my third year in Rotman Commerce specializing in Accounting and Economics.
What’s your favourite thing about Innis?
Definitely the friendly people.
If you could be anywhere in the world right now, where would you be?
I would be at Santorini, Greece. It is the perfect vacation spot and I could take some awesome pictures there.
Favourite course you’ve taken so far?
Beginner level Spanish (SPA 100). It has interactive lectures and tutorials where you can get a chance to actually speak the language. The course is designed in a dynamic way so you never get tired of the course content. The fact that all the lecturers and TAs are native speakers is also a plus. As long as you follow the instructors’ guide, you will arrive a very strong mark. If you enjoy language courses, I would highly recommend this one!
Best study spot around campus?
Roberts 10th floor and above. The views there are out of the world and they really calm me down during this busy period of academic.
What are you involved in outside of the classroom?
My life is heavily centered in Innis and Rotman Commerce. I am the social director for Innis College Student Society this year, and right now I am planning the biggest and one of the most exciting events for the year —Innis Formal! Stay tuned for that. I am also leading one of the First-Year-Learning-Program sessions for 30 first year Rotman Commerce students to help them make smooth transition from secondary to post-secondary. Outside of school, I work part time as a style advisor in a women’s fashion brand Aritzia.
What is your role with the Innis Office of Student Life? How has the experience been so far?
I am volunteering for OSL as the Career Engagement Chair. Basically I facilitate Career Engagement events within Innis, such as resume/cover letter workshops. So far the experience has been amazing. I got to work with some wonderful staff and students.
What do you think are the biggest mistakes students face when looking for a job?
Not knowing what you actually want and applying for everything. I have seen so many students applying for jobs for the sake of applying, or perhaps they are applying because everyone else is. University is this magical land where we get to grow older and wiser and try out different new things to help us figure out what we truly desire. If you are doing what you are doing to pursue that arbitrary notion of success, it is not going to get you too far. When applying for jobs, actually read the job descriptions to see if you are a fit for the position or if you can learn from that role as opposed to just looking at what the pay is like or if it sounds like cool. Make sure you are genuinely interested in the job, and recruiters do notice that. From time to time, you will find yourself enjoying the recruiting process!
What would be your dream career?
I want to channel my inside entrepreneurship into my own fashion boutique/online store one day (totally irrelevant to what I am studying and absolutely not the answer to one of those interview questions like ‘where do you see yourself in 10 years?’ but hey, I can be a little creative here.)
Any advice for first-year Scarlett?
Get yourself out there and be involved. There are so many leadership opportunities at school and do take advantage of that. You can learn so many skills from a leadership role in a student group and you are going to make life long friends along the way. These four years do fly by, so get the best out of it and make every day count!
